Hand & Stone on a mission, opening more Phila.-area stores

A new Hand & Stone spa will open this week in Langhorne, Pa. — one of five area locations planned.

A June 15 opening is planned at 512 Oxford Valley Road.

Others locations are planned for 2000 Hamilton St. in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia (in September), as well as South Jersey locations in Turnersville (by mid-July), Mullica Hill (September) and Glassboro (October).

Hand & Stone, which was founded in 2005 and is based in Hamilton, N.J., is growing rapidly. In 2010, it had 28 locations. It now has more than 70 and plans to open 40 this year.

It has a “mission to bring massage and facial services to the masses,” the company says.

In a slow year, franchisors cut deals to keep growing

With business loans still hard to come by, franchisors unwilling to sacrifice growth are making their systems more affordable to new owners by reducing franchise fees, offering incentives, providing in-house financing or scrutinizing their business model for savings that can be shared throughout the system.

Hand & Stone, a Hamilton, N.J.-based spa concept with eight locations in the Philadelphia area, saves each franchisee tens of thousands of dollars on average by negotiating favorable rent and cashback from the landlord for tenant improvements.

“A lot of landlords have got a lot more vacancy than they used to,” said Bob McQuillan, vice president for franchise development. “There’s not a lease that we’ve done that we haven’t received money back from the landlord.” (Read More)

Leff waxes upbeat over Hand & Stone spas

A former top executive at AAMCO Transmissions is getting into a business with a personal touch.

Todd Leff, who led the merger of the Cottman Transmission and AAMCO chains, is now leading the expansion of Hand & Stone, a chain of massage-and-facial spas.

Hand & Stone has four locations in the Philadelphia market and has plans for eight more by year’s end. Overall, it has 30 locations in nine states and Canada — and is growing through both corporate-owned stores and through franchisees.

While different industries, Leff said the retail transmission business and the spa business are not that different. (Read More)
