Local Hand & Stone Prospers from Second Largest Spending Holiday of the Year

Mother’s Day Spending Expected to Reach $16.3 Billion

For many moms, Mother’s Day is the one time during the year where the attention is reversed and their wants are put first. The day celebrates and honors mothers for their hard work year-round, giving husbands and children the opportunity to pamper the woman in their lives.

As the second largest spending holiday of the year, only trailing the winter holidays, the typical consumer will spend $140.73 on Mother’s Day gifts — up from $126.90 last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Total spending is expected to reach $16.3 billion for Mother’s Day this year, up 9 percent from 2010, with $1.2 billion going toward trips to the spa. This year, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa is trying to help those cash-strapped consumers looking to treat their loved one on this special day.

Through May 8, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa is offering $10 off spa gift cards and $20 off spa packages. With options that include five different packages, three types of massages and the signature facial, consumers have a plethora of opportunities to choose from when finding the perfect relaxation gift for Mother’s Day.

“We’ve found that moms really appreciate it when they get this kind of pampering for Mother’s Day,” said John Marco, founder of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. “Mothers have so much stress in their daily lives, often playing many roles within the family, that this is an opportunity for them to relax and really be treated to something they might not otherwise do for themselves.”

Stress is the No. 1 reason why consumers regularly receive massages, according to Marco. Massage therapy relaxes the body’s muscles and helps increase blood flow, which is responsible for repairing and regenerating muscles.

“Massage-goers feel rejuvenated after an hour-long session, and that’s exactly how a mom wants to feel on Mother’s Day,” Marco said.

But a massage on Mother’s Day will have effects that extend far beyond relaxation. It also:

• Relives Tension and Stress
• Decreases Pain
• Lowers Blood Pressure
• Increases Circulation
• Strengthens the Immune System
• Improves Recovery Time from Injuries
• Reduces Fatigue

“Mother’s Day is the day each year that moms look forward to having time to themselves,” Marco said. “We’re here to provide a calm, soothing atmosphere and our massage therapists have the experience to do just that.”
