Meet Hand & Stone franchisee Teri Evans
Teri Evans is originally from a small town in Louisiana and earned multiple degrees from Northwestern State University in Louisiana for computer information systems and business administration. Teri has a background in technology, and has been the director of IT for the past six years for a small company in the health care industry. She has lived in Austin for the past 15 years and is now opening her first Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa location.
How did you learn about the brand?
The company I worked for was bought by a larger company and due to downsizing my position was no longer available. I took some time off and traveled the world for six months while at the same time figuring out my next move. I knew I had always wanted to own my own business, and after my rest and time away I knew this was the right time for me to pursue my dreams. I began researching franchising, and worked with a franchise consultant. After several recommendations, I decided Hand & Stone was the right opportunity for me.
Why did you choose an opportunity with Hand & Stone?
I love the Hand & Stone business model. During my travels, I often sought out different spas to try out and I am also a regular spa visitor, so I have always had an interest in the industry. I also have a passion for the health industry and personal health.
What makes your business unique in the community?
The full-service aspect of our business and the service we provide sets us apart in the community. There is another location just outside of Austin, but this will be the first location in Austin city proper.
Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
I volunteer for Eels on Wheels, and also work with the Girls Settlement Home in Austin. I also work with First Tee of Austin, teaching golf to young girls ages 5-18. I plan on making my Hand & Stone location a true community service.
What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
I had been doing a lot of research before expressing my plans to open my own business. The initial reaction from people around me expressing their doubts and concerns about opening a business was challenging to hear, however I’m excited about the opportunity to prove it to everyone that Hand & Stone will flourish throughout the community!
What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Hand & Stone?
I am planning to open three locations. Eventually, I would like to open more than three and even venture outside of Austin. I believe in this model and see the potential of the brand.
Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?
I play a lot of golf and love to scuba dive and travel! I’m glad that I’m able to give back to the community through my passions.

Meet Denise Vizzini of Hand & Stone in Royersford, PA
Denise Vizzini is originally from Newtown Square, PA and has been a sole proprietor of a massage therapy business in South Jersey for 15 years. She brings this experience to a Hand & Stone Franchise located in Royersford, PA.
How did you learn about the brand?
I passed by a Hand & Stone location one day, I didn’t know what it was so I checked it out. I liked what my experience was and did a lot more research and found out that it was a solid franchise.
Why did you choose an opportunity with Hand & Stone?
We did some research on other concepts and felt that the beliefs and culture of Hand & Stone fit our values best. We feel that massage therapy as well as facials should be affordable and accessible to everyone. The vision of the company was very important to me as well.
What makes your business unique in the community?
I have 15 years of customer service experience in this industry. I will use this experience coupled with the franchise model to grow my business. What really makes my business unique is we are providing a high level quality service at a reasonable price for both massages and facials.
What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Once I chose this career path it just kind of took off. I started this career to help my mom, who was in a horrific car accident, and now it’s taking on a life of its own! Hand & Stone is allowing me to continue to stay in this industry and give back to the community and help people at the same time. It’s a wonderful opportunity and I’m excited to be able to service the community.
What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Hand & Stone?
We would like to open another location within the next two years. Maybe one day, my children will be interested in operating the Spas.
Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?
I love to travel and spend time with my family and my 4 dogs!!

Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa has opened its first location in Texas in The Woodlands.
The spa recently opened at 4526 Research Forest Drive, and franchisees Tony and Brittany Rodgers are planning to open four additional spas in the local market over the next several years.
“We were attracted to the franchise because of its strong business model,” Brittany Rodgers said.
The franchise has more than 80 years of franchising experience at the corporate level, and that appealed to the young couple, said Rodgers, who is 28 years old.
The couple is already scouting sites for their next location, and they plan to open it by April, she said. The couple will focus on areas north and northwest of Houston for most of its locations.

Hair salons and plastic surgery clinics annually rake in a whopping $70
As the economy improves – and as Baby Boomers struggle to stay young and competitive in the work force – profits will continue to rise, industry experts say.
On a national level, there were 13.8 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in 2011; that number is up 5 percent from 2010. In addition, 5.5 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year – a number that has also grown by 5 percent.
While national numbers for expensive plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and facelifts are rising, Lehigh Valley residents don't seem to be following that trend.
"In the industry as a whole there's a mild downturn especially in big cities, large cities for expensive procedures. People are getting less expensive procedures such as Botox and fillers, and laser skin resurfacing. We continue to grow in low-ticket items. People aren't getting facelifts; instead they're getting Botox," said Dr. Thomas Young, proprietor of Young's Medical Spa in Center Valley.

Hand & Stone was recently featured in 1851 Online in an article titled, "Young Ones: Brittany & Anthony Rogers." The column “Young Ones” features franchisees and franchisors under 40 years of age who are taking the franchising industry by storm. Brittany Rodgers discusses her experience in the industry thus far, and how her and her husband, Tony Rodgers, became Hand & Stone franchisees. Young Ones: Brittany and Tony Rodgers
Name: Brittany and Tony Rodgers
Rank: 21 and 22
Age: Brittany is 29, Tony is 32
Company: Hand & Stone
Brittany and Tony Rodgers always knew they wanted to own their own business–they just didn’t know what. They turned to FranNet, a franchise broker that helps prospective franchisees identify the right opportunity with them. Equipped with a financial plan, passion and vision, the young husband/wife team landed upon an emerging New Jersey-based franchisor, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. Much like other first time franchisees, the duo plans to work their way into multi-unit franchise ownership.
How did you get into the franchise community? (Brittany:)I worked in the medical field of Radiology where I enjoyed helping and caring for patients. Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held for New Hand & Stone
By: Mallory Vough
The opening of a new business can be hectic and a little stressful, to say the least. Unless, of course, the business you're opening is a newHand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa.
Clayton Cox and John Krafty, owners of the new Hand & Stone in Lower Nazareth Township, cut the ceremonial red ribbon Sunday afternoon, marking the grand opening of their business.
"This was a venture we decided to take on a year ago, and it's really an honor to see it come to fruition," Cox said. "We look forward to being a part of the community and contributing to the community."
The Easton Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
According to Cox, the Hand & Stone located in the Lower Nazareth Commons Plaza has been open since January, but he wanted to wait until spring to hold the grand opening.
While members of the public waited to enjoy complimentary chair massages and waxing (chin, eyebrow or lip), Cox and Krafty gave tours of the 11-room spa.
If a tension headache has you feeling weary, Cox explained, the signature hot stone massage will melt away that tension and stress.
The stones, which come in a variety of sizes for different parts of the body, are heated to 120 to 130 degrees. But don't worry about getting burned. Cox said that each massage therapist is trained to give an introductory stroke so the heat isn't jarring.

Hand & Stone massage headed to The Woodlands
By: Brian Shettig
THE WOODLANDS, Texas--Research Forest is getting...hot stones?
That's right. When Hand & Stone massage and facial spa opens April 15, the salon will focus on the spa side of things, including massages with hot stones incorporated into the massaging itself.
"We want to be able to offer the highest quality massage at an affordable price, especially for those who have never had a massage before," said Brittany Rodgers, owber of the location off Research Forest near Diva Boutique and Hubbell and Hudson Kitchen. This is the first Hand & Stone in Texas and possibly the first of five in the north Houston area, Rodgers said.
Rodgers, who owns the spa along with her husband Tony, moved to The Woodlands from Florida after trying to find a business they could both be passionate about, she said. They decided, after some research, to combine their interests in fitness and health into massage and after walking in a Hand & Stone in Orlando, Fla., Rodgers said she knew "right away this was the place."

Hand & Stone Featured in Highlands Ranch Herald
Recently Hand & Stone was featured in the Highlands Ranch Herald in an article titled, "Spring is skin-care season." The article focuses on tips and techniques to rejuvenate the skin with the changing seasons, including the importance of exfoliating, hydrating, and protecting in one’s daily skin regimen. Erik Bostrom provided skincare advice for the article and Esthetician Sarah Kemp demonstrated a facial on one of their clients. The article can be found below.
Spring is skin-care season
Ryan Boldrey
When one thinks about spring they typically think thoughts of renewal and of spring cleaning. But how many people think of prepping their skin for the changing season?
“In terms of skin care, there are primarily three areas – exfoliating, hydrating and protecting – that people need to focus on this time of year,” said Erik Bostrom, owner of Hand and Stone Massage in Highlands Ranch.
With drier conditions outside and more people heading out into extended sunlight, Bostrom said it is absolutely imperative that people use proper protectant.
“The more time we are spending out in the sun, the more critical it is,” he said. “As you are outside, not only do you have to worry about sun damage, but also that all of that excess sun is going to dry out your skin, which goes back to hydration as well.
“We didn’t always have the knowledge that we have now about how the sun affects our skin and affects our health, and certainly there are great benefits to sun exposure, but it’s also something that we need to be careful with and it can be very damaging. You really need to have a good, high-quality SPF on at all times.”
Also important, Bostrom said, is exfoliation – getting rid of the dead skin that builds up over the course of the winter, which will in turn, leave a person with more youthful-looking skin.
The spa offers numerous product lines to help with a good home-care skin regiment and aid in slowing down aging, as well as everything from classic facial treatments to advance treatments such as microderm abrasion and massage.
“A lot of people just don’t understand what a good skin-care regiment consists of,” Bostrom said. “You can’t use just at-home products or just professional treatments and expect your skin to be perfect, you really need to do both, and you should have a good routine.”

Tax Day Causes Stress for Americans Nationwide; Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa Offers Relief
“Relax the Tax” Helps Americans Unwind from Tax Season
Hamilton, NJ – Less than one month away from the annual tax filing deadline, Tax Day is looming around the corner. Even with two extra days to file state and federal taxes this year, millions of Americans will still feel the stresses that result from having to get those yearly taxes in order. According to the American Psychological Association, “stress related to tax deadlines can increase reliance on the unhealthy behaviors many people already use to cope with everyday stressors.” Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa hopes to provide a glimmer of relief to Americans this tax season by providing a bonus deal on that dreaded day called “Relax the Tax.”
On April 17, participating Hand & Stone locations will offer customers a one-day-only instant tax rebate for $40 off the regular price of a Hand & Stone massage. This will be the second annual “Relax the Tax” in Hand & Stone’s history, and is becoming an ever more popular alternative for customers who are looking for a little extra relaxation after submitting their taxes.
“We saw many guests take advantage of this discount last year that left our spa feeling significantly rejuvenated after just an hour session,” said Hand & Stone founder, John Marco. “If there is one day of the year that Americans deserve to take an hour to themselves, it’s Tax Day, and Hand & Stone is here to offer a calm and soothing environment to recuperate.”
According to Marco, stress is the number one reason why consumers receive regular massages. Massage therapy relaxes the muscles which aids the body in generating more blood flow, and therefore helps repair and regenerate muscles faster.
A massage on Tax Day will have effects that extend far beyond relaxation. It also:
- Relieves Tension and Stress
- Decreases Pain
- Lowers Blood Pressure
- Increases Circulation
- Strengthens the Immune System
- Improves Recovery Time from Injuries
- Reduces Fatigue
“At Hand & Stone, we are constantly trying to find ways to make massage accessible to more guests than ever before, and what better way than to offer a great deal on Tax Day,” said Marco. “With all of the added health benefits, consumers will see measurable results.”

Franchisee Profile: Paul Mahler of Levittown, NY
Name: Paul
Mahler
Opening
Date: March 26, 2012
Brand: Hand & Stone
Location:
Levittown, NY
Paul Mahler is a native of Melville, NY and
has spent his entire life living and working in the area. He worked as a lawyer
in Long Island and graduated from Hofstra University Law School. Paul also
volunteers as a paramedic and a firefighter for the Melville Fire Department. He
will be opening the 70th location of Hand & Stone in Levittown,NY at the end of March.
Before
franchising with Hand & Stone, I worked for two different Law Firms for nearly
15 years on Long Island and practiced intellectual property and creditor’s
rights law. I am the ex-captain of the Melville Fire Department but still
volunteer as firefighter and advanced emergency medical technician working on
Friday nights and am constantly on call.
Why did you decide to open your own
business in the wellness industry?
I always
wanted to open my own business and have just been looking for the right
opportunity. One of the things that I was looking for with a new business was
one that really would have a direct impact on someone’s day. The wellness and spa industry is one where people always walk out more relaxed and happier than
when they came in, and I thought that would be a nice transition from
practicing law. It’s also a growing industry and that was appealing from a
business perspective for the potential growth opportunities.
As a
paramedic, I know how frequently people get injured and how massage can be used
for therapy and rehabilitation. By providing this service, I knew that I could
help customers for both relaxation and for total wellbeing.
How did you learn about Hand & Stone?
When I
started looking into franchise opportunities, I was a member of a competitor of
Hand & Stone and noticed how the spa was always busy. I did the majority of
my research online and as I learned about Hand & Stone, I recognized a
tremendous difference in the cooler color palette, design and its services. As
a male owner and operator, I felt that Hand & Stone was a better fit for my
background and offered a better environment for customers to take a break from
the stressors of daily life. Hand & Stone was founded by a physical
therapist, John Marco, and it was an important factor to me that the company
had real experience of the industry and truly knew the health benefits
associated with massage.
What was appealing to you about joining a
franchise system?
Franchising
is a good way to enter into a business as opposed to a startup company. Hand & Stone is great about training, setup
support and the structure that they offer to its franchisees is impeccable. I
liked that there was an outline of how to get started and that the national
headquarters was located so close to my new spa. The corporate team truly cares
about its franchisees and their success.
What makes your business different?
Hand & Stone provides value because they offer high quality products and it’s
affordable for a wider base of customers. There will be an emphasis on customer
service and education, so we can provide our clients with the best experience
possible.
What are some of your goals for the first
year?
I have some
big aspirations for our first year in business, but I hope to have 600 of
members, and believe that if we can provide them with a complete experience, we
should have no problem achieving that. I want to focus on developing and
marketing the business to the local community and find ways to get involved
with community projects.

felt passionate about, a company that could meet their financial goals for
