Franchisee Spotlight: Debbie Gulledge, Clearwater, FL

After so many years in corporate America, it was time for Gulledge to make a change.

“My mom suddenly passed away at 70; it was tragic and was scary,” says Gulledge.  “She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and we both used massage to cope; my mom from the pain of chemotherapy and me from the stress of being a caregiver. Her passing made me take a look at life and realize that I wanted to do something that was meaningful. I wanted to do something to give back to others.”

Massage was a perfect fit.

After about a year of investigating massage franchises, she fell in love with Hand & Stone. Gulledge chose Hand & Stone because they offer a massage at an affordable price and the spas look very elegant and attractive but doesn’t come across as stuffy.  And the best part, she found out that the franchise gives a substantial veteran discount for the franchise fee.

While acquiring her communications degree from Marylhurst University, Gulledge received basic military training outside of college. She continued attending training at the Oregon Military Academy on the weekends while working full time, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and was the Public Affairs Officer for the 41st Infantry Brigade, and then made Captain before she left the Reserves to care for her two children. Gulledge received numerous awards and accolades as an enlisted soldier and officer over her 15+ years in the military, including the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal, just to name a few. She also deployed overseas on several tours to Korea, Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica.

Being in the military has influenced Gulledge and her Hand & Stone franchises.

“My goal is to give back,” says Gulledge. “One thing I noticed is that many places don’t offer specials to all military people. There are a lot of people who served our country for a few years but don’t get the same benefits because they are not technically retired. Our offers apply to all of those who have or are currently serving.”

In addition to the veterans’ benefits, Gulledge’s Hand & Stone locations also host spa parties throughout the year and much of the money raised goes to a charity. Last year she donated over $5000 to the Easter Seals, and we also host several parties a year, raising awareness about ovarian and breast cancer.

The opening of the new spa in Wesley Chapel, Florida, will mark Debbie Gulledge’s second Hand & Stone. As of now, Gulledge doesn’t have plans to continue growing her Hand & Stone locations, but she says “Never say Never” to the idea of it.

Tax Day Causes Stress for Americans Nationwide; Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa Offers Relief

“Relax the Tax” Helps Americans Unwind from Tax Season

Hamilton, NJ – With the tax filing deadline on April 15, Tax Day is looming around the corner, and millions of Americans are feeling the stress that results from having to get their yearly taxes in order. Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa looks to provide a staple of relief to Americans this tax season by providing a much needed deal called “Relax the Tax” on the dreaded Tax deadline day.

On April 15, participating Hand & Stone locations will offer customers an unprecedented one-day-only nationwide sale - offering a 50-minute introductory massage for just $39.95. This will be the fourth annual “Relax the Tax” in Hand & Stone’s history, and the sale is becoming an ever more popular alternative for customers who are looking for a little extra relaxation after submitting their taxes.

“Over the past three years many guests have taken advantage of ‘Relax the Tax’ and left our spas feeling significantly more rejuvenated after just an hour session,” said Hand & Stone founder and COO, John Marco. “If there is one day of the year that Americans deserve to take an hour to themselves, it’s Tax Day. In these ever increasing stressful and uncertain times, Hand & Stone is here to offer a calm and soothing environment to recuperate and relax.”

With Tax Day drawing near and April being National Stress Awareness Month, it is no wonder why people need relaxation now more than ever. Spring marks a time of renewal, rejuvenation, and restoration, but it can also contribute to people feeling a lot of tension and anxiety. Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa has made a commitment to reducing these stressors with their “Relax the Tax” day initiative.

According to Marco, stress is the number one reason why consumers receive regular massages. Massage therapy relaxes the muscles which aids the body in generating more blood flow, and therefore helps repair and regenerate muscles faster.

A massage on Tax Day will have effects that extend far beyond relaxation. It also:

· Relieves Tension and Stress

· Decreases Pain

· Lowers Blood Pressure

· Increases Circulation

· Strengthens the Immune System

· Improves Recovery Time from Injuries

· Reduces Fatigue

“At Hand & Stone, we are constantly trying to find ways to make massage accessible to more guests than ever before, and what better way than to offer a great deal on Tax Day,” said Marco. “With all of the continued added health benefits, consumers will see measurable results and feel great once again.”

Hand & Stone Has Much to Celebrate with 2012 Success

As Americans continue to invest in healthy lifestyles, Hand & Stone continues to enjoy immense success as the brand opened 31 new locations and signed 56 new deals in 2012. Additionally, spa level sales for the system reached $55 million, an 83% growth in system wide revenue over 2011, capping off a year of remarkable growth despite a tough economy.   At the end of 2012, the system featured 97 locations across the United States and Canada and employed approximately 2,500 team members system wide.

Todd Leff, President and CEO, says the company’s emphasis on quality customer service combined with a full menu of healthy lifestyle options for massage and facials and an affordable month to month price have positioned the brand for continued growth in an era where many businesses are closing. As a result of this growing demand, Hand & Stone has plans to open a total of 49 new locations in 2013. They expect at least 44 new locations in the U.S. and five to seven locations in Canada as the company continually eyes new opportunities in international markets.

Leff himself is a believer, having invested in the company after a brief attempt to retire. The successful 52-year-old franchise veteran became President of Hand & Stone in July of 2009 and immediately embarked upon an ambitious nationwide expansion. Since taking over, the company has quadrupled its size and been able to expand into new territories such as Maryland, Missouri, Virginia, Texas, Illinois, South Carolina, and California. “People tend to look at our services as an investment in themselves, something that is almost a necessity because it helps them achieve a peace of mind even if it’s just for an hour or two,” said Leff. “We want to continue to seek out the most aggressive entrepreneurs to help us identify and expand into new markets, create more jobs and provide opportunities to those who dream of running a successful business.”

“As we continue to enter new markets in 2013, we are thrilled at the opportunity to introduce even more people to our affordable healthy lifestyle services,” continued Leff. “The future is certainly bright for Hand& Stone.”

Business Q&A: Paul Mahler of Hand & Stone Massage
By: Nicole Murphy

Melville native Paul Mahler has made a major career switch to bring a state-of-the-art wellness center to Levittown. A former lawyer, Mahler knew he wanted to own his own business one day and after research, Hand and Stone Massage seemed like the perfect choice.

What made you want to open a Hand and Stone location in Levittown?
I wanted to get into a field that helps people. I'm also a volunteer fireman and EMT for the Melville Fire Department so I've always been interested in the medical side of things. Massage therapy is one industry where people are always walking out of here feeling refreshed and better than before.

Franchisee Profile: Paul Mahler of Levittown, NY

Name:  Paul Mahler
Opening Date: March 26, 2012
Brand: Hand & Stone
Location: Levittown, NY

Paul Mahler is a native of Melville, NY and has spent his entire life living and working in the area. He worked as a lawyer in Long Island and graduated from Hofstra University Law School. Paul also volunteers as a paramedic and a firefighter for the Melville Fire Department. He will be opening the 70th location of Hand & Stone in Levittown,NY at the end of March.

What was your career before franchising?
Before franchising with Hand & Stone, I worked for two different Law Firms for nearly 15 years on Long Island and practiced intellectual property and creditor’s rights law. I am the ex-captain of the Melville Fire Department but still volunteer as firefighter and advanced emergency medical technician working on Friday nights and am constantly on call.

Why did you decide to open your own business in the wellness industry?
I always wanted to open my own business and have just been looking for the right opportunity. One of the things that I was looking for with a new business was one that really would have a direct impact on someone’s day. The wellness and spa industry is one where people always walk out more relaxed and happier than when they came in, and I thought that would be a nice transition from practicing law. It’s also a growing industry and that was appealing from a business perspective for the potential growth opportunities.

As a paramedic, I know how frequently people get injured and how massage can be used for therapy and rehabilitation. By providing this service, I knew that I could help customers for both relaxation and for total wellbeing.

How did you learn about Hand & Stone?
When I started looking into franchise opportunities, I was a member of a competitor of Hand & Stone and noticed how the spa was always busy. I did the majority of my research online and as I learned about Hand & Stone, I recognized a tremendous difference in the cooler color palette, design and its services. As a male owner and operator, I felt that Hand & Stone was a better fit for my background and offered a better environment for customers to take a break from the stressors of daily life. Hand & Stone was founded by a physical therapist, John Marco, and it was an important factor to me that the company had real experience of the industry and truly knew the health benefits associated with massage.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
Franchising is a good way to enter into a business as opposed to a startup company.  Hand & Stone is great about training, setup support and the structure that they offer to its franchisees is impeccable. I liked that there was an outline of how to get started and that the national headquarters was located so close to my new spa. The corporate team truly cares about its franchisees and their success.

What makes your business different?
Hand & Stone provides value because they offer high quality products and it’s affordable for a wider base of customers. There will be an emphasis on customer service and education, so we can provide our clients with the best experience possible.

What are some of your goals for the first year?
I have some big aspirations for our first year in business, but I hope to have 600 of members, and believe that if we can provide them with a complete experience, we should have no problem achieving that. I want to focus on developing and marketing the business to the local community and find ways to get involved with community projects.
